The Burning Season - Prelude

The crisp, October air permeated the thin sweater Damien wore, but he barely felt its bite as he stared down at the headstones before him. On either side, Jonathan and William stood silently, Jonathan holding the bouquet of autumn-colored chrysanthemums in his arms. They hadn’t spoken at all since they’d left the house, but then, they didn’t need to. They knew why they were there and what needed to be done; it was part of the ritual they had unconsciously begun so many years before, their annual unspoken agreement.

Damien crossed his arms tightly, trying to keep his mind blank so he wouldn’t have to be flooded with the memories again. This wasn’t for recalling the good times and bad times, it was honoring the lives that had been torn so violently from the three brothers. It was almost their way of making sure the rest of the world knew that they were still alive. Perhaps it was a reminder to them, as well, although if it was, it wasn’t a very good one. The three brothers were one broken dream and misguided good intention after another, and nothing was going to change that anytime soon. Nonetheless, it was tradition and no one wanted to invoke the wrath of whatever spiritual being kept tabs on the traditions of the dead. So here they were, keeping at it, marking one more year in a string of endless years.

He turned to Jonathan then, nodding slightly, to allow him to complete the last part of the ritual. His youngest brother, usually so talkative and bright-eyed, was solemn as he placed the flowers across the three graves. It was done.

Will: “You have an extra, you know.”

The sudden intrusion on the deathly silence was startling; causing Jonathan’s head to jerk up as Damien frowned and counted the mums carefully.

Damien: “No, fifteen, that’s right.”

Will: “Damn. Has it really been fifteen years?”

Without answering, Damien turned and walked back down the path that would lead to the parking lot, leaving the other two to follow along.

Really really intriguing! I love the parallel between the teaser image and the last shot. I can't wait to find out a little more about the three brothers. There's something almost mythical about them and the mood you've further drawn with this prelude, should that make any sense.
